This little beauty will be transforming into a twin turbo street stomping handful.
What was already a nice streetcar will be modified to hold a 360 with twin turbos, mini tubs, intercooler and accessories to suit.
The journey begins to modify a fantastic icon of 70s muscle car art.
Step forward the 1971 Chrysler Valiant VH Charger.
- Mini tub the rear end to house 19″ x 11.5″ rubber. A relatively simple process (vehicle dependent, and not as easy as doing it to a more covered American car, just buy the kit 🙂 ). Remove the sections you intend to keep and weld back in, remove the extra material that is in your way to move the inner tubs inward, weld the aforementioned inner wheel tub inward then fill in the gaps, while you are at it do any rust repairs along the way.
The next step was to position the turboes in relation to any accessories (note the relocation of the alternator down to the lower right side).
This takes many hours of work keeping in mind that not only does it have to get the hot gasses from the engine to the turbos but cannot look like you just chucked some pipe together.
So for the cooling side, I am of the impression that it can be a little nicer on the eye if there is a minimal number of pipes running high in the engine compartment. Now some have to be, such as the radiator but for the intercooler plumbing we have gone with all inlet and outlets going to the intercooler down low. That along with the customer has thankfully been accepting to run two throttle bodies, we have managed to remove the tendency for having to run an intercooler pipe from a top intercooler tank back to a single throttle body.
Firstly the intercooler is mounted to the original radiator mounting points but with a bracket system that incorporates rubber mounts strong enough to hold both this and the radiator weight. Then there is a set of rubber mounts that hold the radiator to the intercooler. The radiator tank i have made wide enough to tidy it all up and there will be a sheetmetal added to the front that will clean up the factory front setup.
